BACKYARD YOGA SHALA

San Antonio, TX | 290 SF

Design: Studio Lingo

Inspired by a yoga retreat the client attended in Bali, this shala seeks to echo that same sense of tranquility at home in her own Texas backyard. Intended to be used as a yoga shala as well as creative workspace, well-controlled natural lighting and ventilation were principal areas of emphasis.

The building’s fenestration is designed so that it can be opened from virtually all sides and utilizes clear multiwall polycarbonate in lieu of traditional glazing on the east and west facades to provide diffuse natural light and privacy in the direction of the neighbors when needed. Deep overhangs are sized to reduce solar gain, while a small vertical split HVAC system is integrated into the closet millwork for when additional thermal control is desired. From an island deck accessed by bridge, to a dance pole, to a custom precast concrete altar, this space is designed to generate an inspiring, immersive experience for this yoga instructor and her students.
